Create a Restoration Hardware Finish with General Finishes Milk Paint & Glaze Effects

Good morning, friends! Fall has finally set in here, and I couldn't be happer. To help ring new the new season, today I'm sharing a recent coffee sack rocking chair makeover as part of the Burlap Lovers Series over at my friend Maryann's blog, Domestically Speaking (and if you're visiting from Domestically Speaking, welcome!)

A step-by-step guide to creating a Restoration Hardware look with General Finishes

Domestically Speaking | Burlap Lovers Series

Head on over to read all about it, and be sure to check out all of the other awesome burlap projects that are featured. You're sure to find something to inspire your fall decor!

Now onto today's post!

For the rocking chair makeover, I decided to experiment with some milk paint and glaze from General Finishes to create a Restoration Hardware-inspired look. I was so happy with how it turned out that I decided to share with you how I did it.

Disclosure: I completed this project using product provided by General Finishes, as part of my supplies for the September Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest. As usual, my opinions on it are 100% honest.

Here's what you'll need:

  • General Finishes Milk Paint in Driftwood
  • General Finishes Glaze Effects in Winter White and Van Dyke Brown
  • General Finishes Enduro Extender
  • an artist's brush (mine is about 1 inch wide)
  • a good quality paintbrush (mine is a 2 1/2 inch angled Purdy brush)

First, apply a base coat of Driftwood Milk Paint.

Once the Driftwood base coat has dried, seal it with one coat of High Performance Topcoat (HPTC).

Next, combine some Winter White Glaze Effects with Enduro Extender, at about a 5:1 ratio. Apply the glaze mixture in a thin coat with your artist's brush.

Using your paintbrush, remove some of the excess glaze in long strokes, dabbing the glaze off of your brush onto a rag as you go. Then, go over the glaze in a quick, "feathering" motion with your paintbrush - the goal is to soften the brush strokes in the glaze and create a "hazy" look.

You can feather out the glaze as much or as little as you like until you're happy with the look. Here's what mine looked like after this step:

Once this layer is dry, use the same paint-on, feather-off method to apply a coat of Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects mixed with Enduro Extender, at about a 1:1 ratio. You'll want the brown glaze to be quite thin, to avoid overpowering the grey and white layers underneath.

You can add more Winter White or Van Dyke Brown to create more highlights or shadow wherever you'd like. Just be sure to feather it out to create a seamless look.

Once the glaze has fully dried, seal the entire piece with HPTC.

Here's the finished look!

August Winner & My Favorite Picks {The Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest}

Wow! That's all I can say after all of the incredible entries from the August Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest!! It was a month of many gorgeous dressers, as well as some out of the box pieces that were nothing short of amazing!

Our generous sponsor, D. Lawless Hardware, provided all of the hardware and embellishments that our participants used to add some extra "Icing on the Cake" this month! Here's a huge THANK YOU to them for inspiring all of these lovely August makeovers! Take a look at how some of my favorite pieces were made extra special with some D. Lawless bling! :)

Media Cabinet Makeover | Tami at Curb Alert!

I think this piece is just beautiful, and one of my favorite things about it is how Tami highlighted the appliques from D. Lawless Hardware with her painting technique. Her highlighting and shadowing skills get two big thumbs up from me!

Antique Record Cabinet Redo | Robin at Redo It Yourself Inspirations

Although I've read Robin's post many times, I still don't quite understand how such a masterpiece emerged from the almost pile of rubble she started with. This is such a stunning transformation that is a huge testament to her design and building skills. Truly amazing.

Vintage Industrial Apothecary Cabinet | Christine at Let's Get Crafty!

The difference between the 'before' and 'after' shots of this piece is what really struck me. It is barely recognizable (and SO much prettier) now! Christine has an awesome eye for detail - every element she chose for this piece, from the color, to her roll-with-the-punches approach to the drawer fronts, to the labels she designed for her pulls from D. Lawless, work so beautifully together. Plus, her staging is perfection :)

I had a slight obsession with plaid in high school (flannel shirts, anyone??), and this dresser makeover took me right back to those days! I love the contrast between the bold green color and the rich dark wood. Even down to the cup pulls Colleen chose, every design element works so well with the clean lines of this piece.

Favorite Picks, please grab a button!

And now, the winners of the August Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest!

In second place, the winner of the $50 D. Lawless Hardware Gift Certificate is....

IKEA Tarva Dresser | Leslie at Paper Daisy Design

Our judges were super impressed at how Leslie took a simple IKEA dresser and, with some simple structural additions, turned it into a designer-inpsired piece. The hardware she chose is the perfect complement to her Greek Key deisgn!

Amazing job, Leslie! Grab a button!

And taking home the 1st place prize, a $200 D. Lawless Hardware gift certificate, is...

DIY Trumeau Mirror | Lucy at Patina Paradise

I can honestly say that I did a legit double-take when I read that Lucy BUILT this amazing mirror. From random pieces and a D. Lawless applique. And then painted it to look like an old world masterpiece. She's the patina queen, you guys. Just outstanding.

Congratulations, Lucy! Please grab a button for your blog!

If you haven't seen all of the August entries yet, do yourself a favor and check them out here - I promise, you will be so inspired!! And be sure to visit  CarrieLynn, Evey, and Charlotte's blogs to see their favorites from this month, too!

The September Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest begins next Monday! The theme is just perfect for the back to school season, and the sponsor is one that I just love! Stay tuned! ;)
